LAMPSHADES for DMY Berlin 2012

Recycling has become very important today since we produce a lot of waste. Everyday objects are made industrially, wasting a lot of energy and money. Together with nine other students from the University of Applied Sciences FHNW Switzerland, Nicole participated in DMY Berlin. During the festival, they created handmade lampshades out of recycled newspaper and clay. Different surface structures could be achieved by varying the smoothness of the mixture and the force with which the material was pressed into the moulds. Every student contributed with a form of a lampshade. Nicole chose a gasoline canister which is also representative for industry. This product can be used as a ceiling lampshade or as a shade for a table lamp.

Together with Renato Pérez, a Mexican glass designer, Nicole had the opportunity to experiment with glass. They were looking for new forms and innovations, and were interested in how one can change the smooth surface of glass through structures and colors. The process is similar to casting. They used smashed window glass and a plaster shell. Before filling the shell with melted glass, they added pigments for colour. The chili pepper was mixed with black pigments. The small plate illustrated was coloured with blue pigments. This model was sandblasted to remove the plaster stains.

In the foundry Kunstgiesserei Sitterwerk in St. Gallen, Switzerland, Nicole participated in the completion of Urs Fischer’s wax statue exhibited at the Biennale in Venice. During her internship she was also involved in the production of several custom-made bronze art works such as sculptures by Paul McCarthy and Hans Josephson.
Nicole learned the process of lost wax casting. She knows how to chase the raw casting in order to remove the remains of the spurs, as well as errors, air bubbles and other imperfections. She made a replica of a stone figure that she had worked on a few years ago and converted it into a bronze figure.
